Importance Of Defined Health And Wellness
Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is “the state of full physical, emotional and social well being and not just the absence of sickness and disease”. Over the years many definitions have also been used to identify a range of situations that may not indicate good health. Some of these include: being healthy in relation to your relationships with others, your sense of self, your ability to manage your resources, your capacity to experience enjoyment and your capacity to cope with challenges or unexpected difficulties.
A good definition of health can help us to realize that even when we feel fine, there are underlying conditions that may need our attention. For instance, a good definition of general health would be that which leaves you feeling physically, emotionally and socially well. This definition is usually very broad because it could also include an aspect of the self, your experiences and relationships with others and even your eating habits. It is important to note that some of the leading causes of death around the world are cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Although, good health should not be equated with disease, nor should it mean that you are safe from getting these or other diseases. A good public health program will ensure that you have access to preventative measures against these illnesses.
On the other hand, a good definition of healthy living would be one in which an individual meets all of the necessary requirements for proper nutrition and physical activity but does not suffer from debilitating illnesses or incurable diseases. Healthy living is often equated with being mentally healthy, but this is not always the case as the absence of mental illness may not necessarily imply a person is mentally healthy. A comprehensive approach to public health is needed so that the different aspects of health and wellness are given due attention, especially since the absence of one aspect can lead to a range of other problems. A balanced approach will take all available resources and help to create environments where disease and illness are kept at bay, and where they are not.
